South Korea's Panstar Group, known for its roll-on/roll-off ferry operations and shipping agency services, is making a strategic push into container shipping. The company recently became the first new member in 19 years to join the Korea Near-Sea Freight Conference, a league of feeder operators active on the South Korea-Japan route. This move marks a significant expansion of Panstar's role in regional liner shipping.

Panstar, which does not own any containerships, will collaborate with established carriers such as Heung-A Line, Dongjin Shipping, and Dong Young Shipping to operate services between South Korea and Japan, and to extend its reach into China and Southeast Asia. Other conference members include KMTC Line, Sinokor Merchant Marine, Namsung Shipping, CK Line, Pan Ocean, and Pan-Continental Line.

The company entered the liner shipping sector in mid-2024 with a standalone South Korea-Japan feeder service, complementing its existing container carriage on ro-ro ferry routes linking South Korea, Japan, and China. In May 2024, Panstar was the sole operator to volunteer for a pilot voyage from Busan to Rotterdam via the Northern Sea Route, organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for September.

Panstar's admission to the conference was based on its reliable on-time performance, particularly in shipping memory chips. Its ro-ro ferries also enable the transport of machinery, and the company has been preparing to ship equipment for the Yongin semiconductor cluster near Seoul. Chairman Kim Hyun-kyum stated that Panstar has reached a turning point and will cooperate with fellow shipping lines to expand container routes to China and Southeast Asia, moving from coastal waters to deep seas.
